    A Beginner

Hi Ms. Sparrow, I thank you for these fantastic notes and videos you've created. I'm still trying to get use to the open strings, cause I'm hitting string D as I push my bow on G and A on E. I'm practicing but as you know it takes time. I already know the notes on the strings but I still have to tune them properly. I'm doing all my best. Thanks again, Best regards, Anthony

    Old learner

I always wanted to play the violin and was envious of those that could play it well, we have an annual pilgrimage to see Andre rieu in Maastricht and just love the sound of many violins playing together. So at 64 years young I decided to do something about it and stumbled upon Alison on YouTube and have been following her lessons for the past few weeks. I am now about to start lesson 10-20 which needs the books so hence here I am. Alison's teaching methods are excellent so I feel confident that I will be expertly guided over the next few months especially with the aide of the books. At some point it would be nice to have a trainer to tell me I am to flat, or to quick or I need to hold the bow more firmly etc etc but will cross that bridge when I come to it. In the meantime I am rattling out more tunes by the week and it's beginning to sound a lot less than I have trod on the cat!!!

    Great!

The songs and theory (Book 2 set) for lessons 11-20 on Alison's YouTube channel are great! I am a beginner violinist and have never taken a formal lesson, but I am progressing nicely with Alison's help! She's fantastic!

I'm finishing up the 1-6 exercises (Learn the Violin: lesson 5 of 20) off Alison's YouTube channel and wanted to be ready for the next steps so I purchased and downloaded "*COMBO DEAL* | LEARN TO PLAY THE VIOLIN BOOK 2 AND SONG BOOK 2 | (DOWNLOAD ONLY)" and the transaction went great! I downloaded the documents and opened them to make sure they downloaded correctly, and they did. I'm looking forward to starting the lessons! I'm going to be printing all pages and binding them with my GBC binder with plastic combs like Alison shows on her video. I highly recommend!

    Love this instructor!

I have learned a lot from Alison's violin lessons (even though I have only been studying violin for a few months). I was happy to purchase these violin books, both to further my violin education and in support of this instructor. They are well worth the cost, and the immediate download is a bonus!

I always wanted to play the violin....a very emotionally expressive instrument, but was told by a pessimistic parent that it was exeptionally difficult and you had to start very yough....i was 8 years old then.......16 years later i tried again ,went for about 6 lessons @ 2 weekly intervals...but felt i wasn't getting anywhere......30 years later!!...enter the internet and you tube 3 months ago i bought a violin (original one of thirty years ago went missing) i found a video made in the 80's by Nick Sanders (wish i could have laid my hands on that back then in the 80's) , i am playing simple melodies already.....and now i have Alisons combo to take me another step forward, clearly explained.....good value.....well done Alison! Will be great to see what follows!? (Book three)

    Great book

I am a classically trained guitarist. I always wanted to play violin. This book is really helpful. I'm learning a lot. Violin lessons are really costly. The amount of knowledge you get from the books is really unbelievable. Thanks Alison for providing the wonderful work

Great system compared to my other violin book and I especially love the songbook!

Posted by Emily on 1st May 2017

I'm an adult beginner. I played violin from ages 4-8 as a child, but do not remember sight reading or much else from my lessons. As an adult I've purchased a few books (Essential Elements and another similar "school band" book) that are cluttered and difficult to work through. Every time I want to advance my technique--and in some cases rather than advance technique--there is a new song I need to master that isn't much different than the last. Not only that, but the songs are such as "Hot Crossed Buns" and other that leave me unfulfilled. Alison introduces technique more quickly and in a straightforward and uncluttered way. The introduction of theory and scales first off is wonderful. I can practice bowing technique while learning theory, which my other books left out and it meant I spent as much as it cost to get Violin Book 2 and Songbook for theory books separately. Since my desire to play violin is rooted in my love for classical music, Alison's songbook has been a HUGE motivator for me to continue my studies. I adore the songs she has arranged to be accessible to the beginner. I am so grateful to Alison for this! I'm learning to play Tchaikovsky right out of the gate! The only problem (aside from some petty quibbles with proofreading and repetition) is that I would like to see sheet music for the scales and arpeggios included in the book. Just so that I can learn sight reading more quickly, maybe arranged with some different rhythms and bowing techniques that get progressively more difficult. Perhaps book three could include this as part of a recap of book 1. All in all it's a wonderful book system for learning violin and along with Alison's videos and her other sheet music and tutorials I've reignited my motivation and obsession with learning the violin.
